A photo found at top York Attraction the Yorkshire Air Museum has lead to an extraordinary find of over 2000 pieces of correspondence that chronicle the life of a French airman who was based in the UK.
This amazing archive was found when a single photograph was discovered at the Yorkshire Air Museum of the airman, Francis Uzay, and his war time lover Barbara Rigby. Researchers tracked Rigby to Australia where she now lives, and she kindly donated the letters, diaries, photographs and correspondence that documented their love and lives.
This find has been presented to the French National Archive in Paris by representatives of the Allied Air Forces Memorial which resides at the Air Museum.
The find will be fully translated and turned into a novel and academic publication for research purposes.
The Yorkshire Air Museum is one of the many Yorkshire attractions that you can visit for free with your Yorkshire Pass.
