Giant Sunflower at York Minster in aid of Hospice

York MinsterThose visiting York Minster over the next few days will get a real treat in the form of a giant sunflower blooming.

But this flower isn’t a real plant. It is, in fact, an art display comprising over 2,500 individual pieces that have been coloured in by children from 13 nurseries and primary schools.

The flower will be displayed in the building’s North Transept and marks Hospice Month for York’s St Leonard’s Hospice. That specific flower is significant as it the hospice’s symbol and is used to raise awareness for the cause.

Whilst visitors to the minster will find the sunflower a lovely surprise, the residents are fairly used to it as it is the fifth display to have been held at the Minster. Others took place in 1997, 1999, 2001 and 2005.

Other events being held in the city to mark the special month include a Go Yellow day, a midnight walk and a summer fair.

You can take a visit to see the giant sunflower by using your Yorkshire Pass to get free entry to the York Minster attraction.
